Jaslyn Barrow

Master of Science in Sport and Human Performance

Greenville, Mississippi

Jaslyn Barrow, the daughter of the late David and Jo Ann Barrow, was born March 2, 1996 in Greenville, MS. She has an 8-year old daughter, Brooklyn Barrow, and 3 siblings, the late Thaddeus Edwards, Martez Edwards, and Jimmetta Williams. At the age of 2, she diagnosed with a nerve cancer called Neuroblastoma, and had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation for approximately 2 and a half years. After leaving the hospital, she lived a “normal” life. In 2014, she graduated from Greenville-Weston High School, the top of her class, received her Bachelor of Arts in History from Tougaloo College in 2018, and obtained her Master of Business Administration from Jackson State University in 2022. She plans to continue her education and pursue a Doctor of Business Administration degree, become a National Board Certified Teacher, and eventually become an athletic director.

During her Teach for America commitment, her job became easy and enjoyable. She was able to connect with her students better because she took the time out to understand their lifestyles and help them work through their school and social lives. It was important for her to become familiar with families because working together created a smoother transition from work at home to work at school. Teach for America has taught her patience and persistence. It is vital that, as a village, we take the time out to study our children and meet their needs to create an environment that is conducive to their learning. As teachers, it is sometimes important that children should adjust to our classroom and our needs, but teachers must also adapt and adjust for each individual student. Teaching is a passion.

Jaslyn’s Social Entrepreneurship project focuses on improving the involvement of parents and the community in our public-school system. With the programs she plans to implement, parents will be able to receive hands on learning, using the lessons that their child(ren) will work on in tested areas (based on scores). It will also provide educational trips which will allow teachers to show students how these lessons (or subjects) can be used in the real world. Her social entrepreneurship project is being developed because she wants to make a change for the better in the community and schools.

She lives by the quote “Choose your hard!” In life, everything will be difficult, but some difficulties have a more relaxing and enjoyable outcome. It is important that we do our best in all things because life will never be easy, so we have the option to “choose our hard”, but we must choose wisely.
